Head of Design Research

Grow and support Plan’s design research business and support general company management

Knowledge, competences and experience

The key areas of knowledge, competencies and experience you will need:

Design research

  • Experience of leading design research offers and projects, particularly at the front-end of innovation 
  • A background in product/service design and consumer/user research
  • Understanding of marketing, market research and consumer insights used within a strategic design approach


  • Experience in attracting, developing and motivating talent
  • Can juggle projects, priorities and resources to get things done in a fast-paced and often changing environment
  • Ability to work effectively with internal, client and partner team members

Business development

  • Experience across a variety of sectors, with the following being most desirable: digital services, consumer technology, and FMCG
  • Experience of engaging in professional/industry forums and networks
  • Ability to deal with clients empathetically and confidently, recognises and anticipates client needs and explores ways Plan can help
  • Experience of working as a consultant, and ideally in-house
  • Experience of selling design research to clients and stakeholders


  • Able to deal with complexity, ambiguity and paradox; and can systematically breakdown and tackle complex problems
  • Can generate new, relevant and actionable content and process ideas
  • Works rigorously with a high attention to detail and quality
  • Experience of running creative workshops that tackle multiple business perspectives
  • Can generate ideas for innovation that are grounded in business knowledge, trends and consumer lifestyle understanding
  • Strong eye for visual and narrative communication 
  • Good written communicator, able to summarise ideas and observations clearly and concisely 

Key tasks

Design research practice

  • Lead business development of Plan’s design research offer
  • Conduct thought leadership activities around design research, ensure Plan’s offer, process and tools are aligned with latest best practice
  • Hire, grow and retain talent in Plan’s design research team and other areas of expertise
  • Pro-actively lead improvement of Plan’s operational quality and efficiency in design research and other areas 
  • Build Plan’s design research freelance and partner network

Marketing and sales

  • Collaborate with the wider BD team on general activities, that may not be solely Design research focused

Client projects

  • Lead large and medium projects, primarily focused around design research or where it is one part, giving direction and setting quality standards


  • Work collaboratively and effectively with the management team
  • Lead some management team workstreams


  • Line manage reports through regular check-ins, and coach other team members in on-project situations

FMCG innovation planner

To support and grow Plan’s consumer goods innovation practice


The key areas of knowledge, competencies and experience you will need:

  • Background in product/industrial design
  • 1-2 years experience in a consultancy or in-house design/innovation team
    (ideally in the FMCG sector)
  • Interest in front-end of innovation approaches and methods
  • Creative and analytical thinker
  • Systematic and structured problem solver
  • Clear visual and written communicator, who can distill insights and ideas concisely
  • Clear and compelling visual communicator, procaine in InDesign  
  • Proactive and collaborative mindset
  • Manages own time and priorities effectively       

Key tasks

Client projects

  • Lead smaller projects, with guidance from seniors
  • Manage larger projects
  • Assist in the set-up, moderation and capturing of design research
  • Analyse research data to help uncover insights and identify opportunities
  • Assist in the set-up, running and capturing of client workshops
  • Work with seniors to develop compelling presentations, books
    and interactive deliverables
  • Set-up and organise project data and resources 
  • Provide general support to other team members e.g. co-ordinating printing,
    summarising meeting notes etc. 

Management and development

  • Maintains a strong focus on self-development and the acquisition of further
    knowledge, shows willingness to guide and mentor junior staff   
  • Contributes to the development of Plan’s client relationships and shares
    insights with account team
  • Actively engage in Plan’s cultural development
  • Shares industry news, suggests new business ideas and contributes
    to social media activities

Product strategy consultant

Help develop our client accounts by managing and delivering front-end innovation projects.

Knowledge, competences and experience

  • A background in product/interaction/service design, preferably educated to post-graduate level
  • Experience in front-end innovation projects
  • Able to deal with complexity, ambiguity and paradox
  • Mix rigour with creativity
  • Combines a big picture perspective with an eye for product experience detail
  • Can systematically breakdown and tackle problems
  • Works rigorously with a high attention to detail and quality
  • Experience of managing projects and project teams
  • Able to juggle priorities to get things done in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal, written and graphic communicator

Key tasks

  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams, which include people at Plan and external partners.
  • Understand and develop cogent points of view on our clients’ key issues
  • Write successful proposals and managing project budgets
  • Work with senior team members to facilitate and guide client teams through project processes
  • Facilitate client workshops
  • Deliver insightful, strategic and compelling presentations to senior management audiences
  • Develop new processes, tools and resources
  • Coach junior staff in the development of their capabilities and project delivery

Service strategist

Help develop our product-service strategy accounts by managing and delivering projects, and providing excellent client service.

Knowledge, competences and experience

  • 3+ years experience as a service designer/researcher for digital experiences, preferably educated to post-graduate level in a related discipline
  • Experience of applying a variety of service design methodologies to a variety of complex business challenges – particularly at the front-end of the process
  • Able to create compelling service visions and develop strategic concepts, looking at the bigger picture (people, business, technology)
  • Able to systematically break down and analyse a client problem, and work creatively to develop a process to solve it
  • Experience in planning, managing and conducting qualitative research
  • Experience in planning and facilitating effective collaboration workshops
  • Appreciation of technical and organisational implementation issues around service design
  • Able to develop cogent points of view on service strategies and share confidently with team, client and partners
  • Can communicate recommendations in a clear and visually engaging manner, and with a compelling narrative to senior client audiences
  • Experience in writing successful proposals and managing project budgets
  • Used to juggling projects, priorities and resources

Key tasks

Service design strategy

  • Research and analyse contextually (social, technological and competitive)
  • Map service ecosystems and blueprints and direct their visualisation
  • Plan user research, lead insight analysis and identify opportunity areas
  • Envision product-service concepts
  • Create frameworks, tools and training programmes that enhance our clients’ organisational abilities
  • Facilitate client forums and training events alongside company Directors and Consultants

Business and offer development

  • Work with Directors to break down and structure clients’ issues and frame new projects
  • Help write proposals for complex product-service strategy projects with existing and new clients
  • Contribute to  business development meetings
  • Develop Plan’s service strategy capability

Client service

  • Deal with clients empathetically and confidently
  • Recognise and anticipate client needs and explore ways Plan can help
  • Resolve difficult questions and issues
  • Build trust and relationships
